Blue guest cottage at Windmark Beach house

Sea of Blue

To take full advantage of the space, designer E. Dale Trice painted the walls, ceiling, trim, and even the switch plates the same shade of soft pale blue.

"This makes the entire space look twice as big," says Trice. The pops of green, black, and chocolate add warmth to the palette.

More Than a Bedroom

The cottage also includes a small kitchenette to help guests feel more at home. To separate the kitchen space from the sleeping area, Trice hung a sheer portiere to act as a door and give some privacy.

In the Kitchen

This small kitchenette is the perfect space to keep necessities on hand in the carriage house. The cabinets contain dishes, and the mini refrigerator stays stocked with cool drinks to enjoy after a day at the beach. Vertical blue subway tiles create a striped effect and lift the eye upward.

Breakfast Table

Two chairs and a small side table can function as a seating area or makeshift breakfast table. The windows in the carriage house have contrasting textures with bamboo blinds and cream curtains.

Croc Hunter

Large floor pillows add plenty of extra seating. Two large alligator prints hang close to the ground, one in the kitchenette and the other by the front door. The cottage is filled with windows (leaving little room for accents), so these reptile prints are the perfect fit to crawl along the baseboards.

Fit for a King

Covering this large wrought-iron bed is a custom-made coverlet with a gathered seam set a few inches from the edge (creating a full, skirtlike effect). Flowing to the floor, this chocolate-and-cream leaf-patterned bedspread eliminates the need for a bed skirt.
