A Studious Dining Room
Roger Davies
The front door opens into a combination dining room/library. Joe Paul, an architect, built a secret door in the wall (just behind Sabine’s chair) to hide the ladder that moves around the room to reach books on the second level. The arched, unfinished copper ceiling reflects outdoor light and gives the space a warm glow. A repurposed school window guard acts as a balcony railing off the master bedroom, next to the library.

Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
