Graceful Transition

This 5- by 8-foot steel-clad door pivots and balances on pins, so a slender steel framework is all that is needed to hold it and the surrounding tempered glass panels in place. Overhead, a similar openess repeats: Smaller panels of glass fit between the redwood joists that support the decking of the roof structure, making the interior roof seem to come out to meet you.

Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
