Garden on the roof

Norm Plate

This rooftop garden in Bainbridge Island, Washington, sits 12 feet above ground level on a property that was engineered to support its weight. Cedar planter boxes around the deck are filled with a lightweight blend of compost, vermiculite, lava rock, and topsoil that's freshened with compost each year to keep nutrient levels topped off. Inside are a few low-maintenance permanent plants for year-round interest, plus seasonal annuals for spots of color.
