Harrod's Creek Idea House: Back Porch
Covered porches and terraces encompass this house. You can enjoy outdoor spaces at every turn. "The long porches go back to the early ranch houses. They shade the house, and the doors can be opened even if it's raining," says architect Mark Carlson. "The overall design was positioned to catch breezes," adds builder Michael Deane.

Outdoor Paradise
Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
