Lofty Space
The original heart-pine flooring in the living room was preserved and the horizontal siding on the walls was coated with 10 layers of pickling stain to lighten up the space. The windows have shutters, rather than curtains, for a casual, comfortable look. The ceiling in the living area was opened up to create a sleeping loft. Instead of taking up square footage with a bulky staircase, the loft is accessed via a simple ladder.

Outdoor Paradise
Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
