Contemporary Tranquil Retreat
Thomas J. Story
This smart remodel in Orinda, California, does more with less by emphasizing open spaces, organic materials, and the beauty of restraint. The walls dividing the kitchen, living, and dining rooms were eliminated. In their place, slender bronze-patina columns give just the faintest sense of room divisions.

Outdoor Paradise
Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
