Expanding the Space
Carved from attic space, a new tray ceiling with tongue-and-groove slats makes this space seem much larger. The boards were whitewashed to give an old-world effect, and recessed lighting was added to the new ceiling to make the space seem brighter. Instead of window treatments, this homeowner chose simple wooden shutters. They open for light and close for privacy, while their upright lines emphasize the room's height.

Outdoor Paradise
Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
