To create a generous family gathering space, the architect designed a living room addition to look like it was originally built to connect the main house to a nearby barn. A large Rumford fireplace generates ample warmth in the winter, while high windows on either side of it provide cross ventilation in the summer. To give the new construction some instant age, he installed antique paneling he found on eBay and other online sources. The floor planks came from a barn in Wisconsin; the rafters, from one in Pennsylvania. All of this wood lends a sense of warmth and history, plus a rich, woodsy scent.
