Warm Gathering Space
To create a generous family gathering space, architect Dan Costa designed a living room addition with a large Rumford fireplace to look like it was originally built to connect the main house to a nearby barn. To give the new construction some instant age, he installed antique paneling he found on eBay and other online sources. The floor planks came from a barn in Wisconsin; the rafters, from one in Pennsylvania. All of this wood lends a sense of warmth and history, plus a rich, woodsy scent.

Outdoor Paradise
Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
