Compact and Clever
You don't always need a big space to make a big impact. This well-planned kitchen renovation involved only 250 additional square feet and a reconfiguration, but it's full of conveniences and appealing design details. Materials were selected for their beauty, practicality, and relationship to the rest of the house. Random-width heart-pine floors were selected because they match those on the home's original first floor. The speckled granite countertops with streaks of gray and neutral tones hide marks and are also easy to maintain. The wooden island has a distressed finish.

Outdoor Paradise
Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
