It's wonderfully convenient to have lots of storage in a kitchen, but expanses of matching cabinetry can sometimes look a little too well matched. Interior decorator Greg Mewbourne of Birmingham, Alabama, used a staggered placement of maple cabinets as a simple yet effective design feature in his kitchen.

 The far left wall cabinet is 42 inches in height; the other two are sized to accommodate the vent hood and microwave. The freestanding steel shelf unit provides open storage for cooking gear and a television.
