An upstairs hallway can be more than a passageway, as this example vividly illustrates. The 4-foot-wide alcove occupies part of a soaring two-story accent wall and overlooks the kitchen. It functions as a homework station for the kids. The counter provides plenty of room for a computer; above it are built-in bookshelves.
