Made in the Shade: Valance/Roman Shade
On the bay window of this guestroom, designer Rick Stembridge hung multiple shades under a continuous valance. Shades--in addition to draperies, curtains, blinds, and shutters--offer versatile options for dressing up a window and filtering light. Adding a top treatment--such as a valance, swag, or cornice--gives the shade personality.

Outdoor Paradise
Who says the back porch has to be attached to the house? One Memphis family enjoys theirs, which is nestled in the heart of the back yard. Although the structure was part of the property when the family bought the home several years ago, its size and scale seem ideal for today. The screened porch section measures 8 x 12 feet; exposed beams on the inside give it an open feel. To the left, an enclosed room that's used for storing outdoor equipment takes up another eight feet. - Integrated Cabinets
