Bungalow yard

Lisa Romerein

From the sidewalk, the classic façade of this 1913 Southern California bungalow offer no clue to the surprise out back. The owners wanted to find a cost-effective way to unite the original 1,000-square-foot bungalow and its backyard. The result: expansion of the kitchen, extension of the master bedroom, and a new freestanding bathroom within its midst. A Douglas fir frame, wrapped with translucent thermal polycarbonate normally used for greenhouses, opens the home to the yard.
