Fireplace Accessories

Wood holders
You can find numerous styles of metal log cradles and racks for storing small amounts of firewood and kindling near your wood-burning fireplace or stove.

U-shaped configurations take up the least space.

Some styles coordinate with fireplace tool sets or fire screens. Creative alternatives range from new or antique pails to old tubs, troughs, or boilers. Large baskets also make attractive log holders. For carrying wood in from the woodpile, you might want a canvas or leather sling as well.

Other accessories
Among other fireplace accessories are metal damper plaques that tell you whether the damper is open or closed, cans or pails for carrying out cold ashes, and wall-mounted or freestanding match holders.

A fire-resistant hearth rug to protect your floor or carpet from sparks can be a useful and attractive addition to your fireplace area; wool is appropriate though expensive, while synthetic rugs treated with flame retardant are less costly.

Finally, if you have a fireplace with a gas starter, you can find fancy gas keys that look attractive hanging on a hook by your fireplace.
