Easy Ribbon Redo: Modern Lampshade
With a yard of fabric, coordinating ribbon, and some glue, you can give an ordinary shade a designer look.
Materials
• Plain paper shade or hard-backed linen shade
• Brown mailing paper
• Fabric
• Aleene's No-Sew fabric glue
• Paintbrush
• Ribbon*
• Sealah tape
• Burnishing tool
*Ribbon quantity will depend on the size of your shade and the pattern you wish to create. The shade shown right used approximately 3 yards of ribbon.
Instructions
1. Inspect your lamp's existing shade. If it's a plain paper or other hard-backed style, you're in business. If not, you will first need to purchase a shade.
2. Next, select a fabric and ribbons that coordinate with the color of your lamp base. Make a pattern for cutting the fabric by rolling the lampshade across a large piece of brown mailing paper, tracing the shape as you go. Use this pattern to cut the fabric to fit the shade.
3. Adhere the fabric to the shade using Aleene's No-Sew fabric glue (it won't bleed through the material). Affix the ribbon to the shade with Sealah tape and the burnishing tool, or with fabric glue. For a simpler design that saves a step, skip the fabric cover and simply secure ribbon to the plain shade.
Size TipA lampshade should look proportional to the base on which it sits; as a rule of thumb, the shade for a table lamp should be at least two-thirds the height of the base. The shade should also be wide enough to allow at least a 2-inch (5cm) separation between the bulb and the shade on all sides and long enough to cover the electrical fittings.
