Tips From an Organization Expert
This organization expert dishes on what it takes to keep your home (and your life) cleared of unwanted clutter.
MHI: My closet is a disaster area! Where do I start?
JW: Set aside a day to organize your closet or, if that seems too overwhelming, break it down into manageable chunks over a few days.
- Go through your closet category by category. Start with your shoes and move on to dresses, pants, sweaters, skirts, tops, underwear, outerwear, exercise clothes, purses, belts, scarves, accessories, and so on.
- Once you have all the items in one category in front of you, evaluate each piece one at a time: Does it fit? Do I still like it? Is it damaged?
- Keep only what you absolutely love, need, and makes you feel fabulous. Get rid of items you have never worn -- even if you did spend good money on them. If it’s been hanging in your closet since you bought it a year ago and you still haven’t worn it, you don’t love it as much as you thought you did! Donate it or give it away.
- Then, group clothing by season so that you can switch out your closet to fall/winter clothing and spring/summer clothing. Store off-season clothing elsewhere to make the clothes you are currently using easily accessible.
