More Tools

Here's what you'll need to put a single coat of paint on an exterior structure. Remember that this is only an estimate: you may need more or less depending on what colors you're choosing, how many coats you need, and what quality paint you're buying.

WALLS

This tool assumes that a gallon of paint covers up to 300 square feet, so check the can to make sure the brand you're buying will cover that much. If it doesn't, you'll need to increase the number of gallons accordingly.

WINDOWS & DOORS

For doors and windows, this calculator assumes a standard-width trim. If you have extra-wide trim, shutters, or other trim elements to be covered, you'll need more paint. Also note that the minimum paint calculated is .25 gallon, or 1 quart. If you need two quarts, it's usually more economical to buy a gallon.
