Put to the Test: Green Cleaning Products
Eco-friendly products are readily available in stores nationwide, but are they worth all the hype? We tested 25 popular green cleaning products--from detergents to toothpaste--to find out which ones worked well and which ones we’d rather leave on the shelf.
Natural Laundry Detergent
Why it’s green: This detergent is nontoxic and biodegradable, free of phosphates and optical brighteners, hypoallergenic, safe for septic and grey-water systems, not tested on animals, and kosher-certified.
What we thought: “I pretty much thought it would be like ‘hippie’ Woolite and would be too delicate to really clean, but I was wrong. All of my clothes--even the gross gym and yard clothes--came out perfectly clean. And the scent, while subtle, is really nice.”
