Why We Love It

Cottage style, as presented by Cottage Living magazine, is distinct from country style or apartment style or any other small-space style in that it is so much about honoring the integrity of a modest old house. This kitchen, owned by one of the magazine's editors, epitomizes cottage style. The materials, from the beaded board cabinet inserts to the waxed-pine shiplap ceiling and the concrete countertops, all respect the humble home's 1924 origins without sacrificing style.

What Makes It Work

The thing that keeps this kitchen from looking "ditsy," a term used by a photographer I know when referring to things that are too cute, is the use of industrial elements. They add an edge. The chemistry-lab barstools, the streetlights hanging over the bar, and the marble-tiled backsplash all work to evoke a more complex atmosphere.

Steal This Idea

Charm up an old metal light fixture with that quintessential cottage fabric–burlap. Loosely tied with flea market ribbon, it's one of those design details that inspires you to look at the things you already have in a fresh way
