Thom Filicia is no stranger to the design world. Along with his most recent undertaking of designing the W Hotel in Atlanta, he has his own furniture line, design company, book, and TV show -- just to name a few endeavors. Amidst his busy schedule, we sat down to talk decorating, budget tips, and color combos.
Because everyone is focused on saving money, do you have any tips for decorating on a budget?
"Try to use as much of what you have, and then infuse pieces with punch," Thom says.
More tips from Thom:
What current decorating trend do you think you’ll be tired of in five years? What current trend do you love?
"Right now, it’s all about layers and pattern on pattern," Thom says. He admits his tastes lean toward cleaner, crisper, more tailored design. He believes people are "coming out of a spell" and will return to smart, more straightforward design.
Do you have any personal design secrets you’d like to share?
After a pause to collect his thoughts, Thom gives us plenty of secrets to share with you. "Black lampshades can make any lamp look nice," he says. He believes you can place any object in a Lucite box, and it will make it look like a work of art (and be prepared for people to ask where you got it). And for a chic look in the bedroom, wash a set of cotton sheets three times, put them on the bed, and then top them with a fabulous bedspread or comforter.
In your opinion, what is one thing that every room needs?
"A surprise," Thom says. He suggests throwing in a "fun, imaginative" accent, such as bringing outdoor lighting inside or adding a pop of color.
What is your favorite paint color at the moment? What do you like to pair it with?
Thom’s favorite color right now is a "strong green," such as Kelly green. And for its pairing, he chose charcoal grey. "It responds nicely to green," he says.
Homeowners "don’t trust their instincts," he says. "(They) choose safe color instead of color that makes them smile." Thom's remedy? "Have fun with it, and put your personality in design."
