A double-pedestal base supports a mahogany tabletop

Why We Love It

When you've got a good dining room table, you're more than halfway to a great dining room. Most dining rooms serve only one purpose, so the table is the foundation. This mahogany double-pedestal table, from Coastal Living , has all the character of a fine antique, lending the room dignity and a sense of permanence. This table is on my own personal "wish list," since my table at home has four legs set at the table's edge, making it impossible to seat more than four people without someone straddling a leg.

What Makes It Work

Because this dining room is in an island retreat in the Bahamas, the designer/homeowner chose to surround the table with slip-covered chairs, introducing a cool, casual note. Interesting contrasts fill the bookshelves, including silver serving pieces paired with seashells. Fine china dresses up the table, but a sea grass rug underscores everything with simple texture and balances out the formality.

Steal This Idea

A set of framed shell prints hangs over a glass topped table that could easily be a piece of outdoor furniture. It's the perfect blending of high and low, formal and casual.
