So many beach houses are sterile builder boxes, so a beamed ceiling can be a powerful tool in adding character to a room. With the wood left unpainted, either waxed or stained, it can introduce a note of natural texture into the room, as well as lend a sense of architectural integrity to an undistinguished space.
