1. Start With a Clean Slate

"Ditch the throw pillows that come with your sofa," Fran says. "It's best to start with a blank canvas." Fran also suggests using only down-filled pillows for extra comfort and better shape.

2. Add Symmetry

Anchor the sofa with a pair of matching pillows on the outside corners. "The sofa is the place to use those patterned fabrics that you love but were afraid to use on large pieces," Fran says.

3. Try Different Shapes

Add two pillows of different fabrics and shapes for off-center interest. Size is also key. "Keep it proportionate," Fran says. "I hate too-small pillows, but you should make sure your pillows aren't higher than the back of the sofa."

4. Finish With Personality

Add a large center lumbar pillow with a monogram as a personal touch. "You really want the middle pillow to be the statement maker," Fran says.
