College graduates moving home.

A Growing Trend

Many college graduates are finding that tough economic times and a competitive entry-level job market means moving back in with Mom and Dad. Fondly termed “Boomerang Kids,” 80% of recent college graduates have moved back in with their parents after graduation as a way to save money in a tough job market according to collegegrad.com.

However, moving back home doesn’t have to mean a return to the childish bedroom you grew up in. Clever design ideas combined with a DIY mindset can transform this space into a glamorous, sophisticated sanctuary without breaking the bank.

Starting Out, Before

Start out by examining your space. Take measurements, and draw up a sketch of what you would like your new retreat to look like. Next, get rid of any clutter -- especially important in small spaces. This includes your collection of stuffed animals and high school cheerleading pom-poms. Keep those items boxed-up and out of site.  A well-organized living space is a great way to help manage stress and anxiety.

ABCs of New Design Trends

Luxury Wall Coverings
Wall paper has resurfaced as a design trend and is a great way to add instant color, pattern and scale.

Metallic Finishes
The shimmer of metallic paints and accessories is a brilliant way to add pizzazz to any room design.

Natural and Textured  Fibers
Mix patterns and textures to add depth. Materials of natural fibers are eco-smart and will last.

Create an Accent Wall

Start by setting a focal point. Wallpaper has made a serious comeback and will create a dramatic effect. Choose a large-scale pattern, such as this muted damask in calming hues of French blue and pewter. Cover one wall with the wallpaper, and paint the other walls and the ceiling a corresponding soft color. Check out stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s and online retailers for great wallpaper designs at affordable prices.

Make a Day Bed

Turn a basic twin bed into a sofa-like day bed. An oversize, white, textured quilt tucked neatly around a single mattress sets the stage for a clean, tailored effect. Chic throw pillows in a uniform color scheme dress it up when company comes over. Your guests will feel like they’re lounging on a couch rather than lying in your bed. A sauper soft throw blanket pulls the whole look together.

Create a Lofted Bed

Create a Lofted Bed

Create a convenient storage space and give the bed a contemporary, cool lift using cinder blocks, plywood from a home improvement store and a three yards of metallic vinyl found at marine supply or craft and hobby stores.

Begin by “gift wrapping” 4 16x8x12” concrete blocks in a metallic vinyl using a glue gun to secure edges. Only 3 sides will show when assembled. Next, cover a 39”x75”x3/4” piece of ply wood (cut free at home stores from a standard 4’x8’ board) with the same vinyl fabric using a heavy-duty staple gun. Only a small amount of board’s edge will be visible when complete so only a 4-5” border is need around the bottom of the board. Measure and place covered blocks topped with board so the bed loft will be at center of wall.  (Add a fifth block in center for extra support.) Throw on the mattress and viola!

Design Note: We chose to use a vinyl for its luxurious appeal; however, any heavy-duty fabric will work.  Check your mattress measurements some vary in size by an inch or so.

A light sconce mounted next to the bed.

Night Light

Nothing sets the tone, nor the mood of a room like lighting. Adding a dimmer switch to overhead lights is a simple and inexpensive way to keep control of the room. A light sconce mounted next to the bed saves space, is convenient for reading at night, and there are no messy lamp wires to get tangled in

Secure to wall high enough to allow for headroom while reading in bed and the mounting kit hides messy wires.

The Ultimate Bargain Shopping

Shop your family attic and basement, a local thrift store, or check out Craigslist.com (where we found most of these pieces) for free or inexpensive furniture. These reclaimed items will become long-lasting design elements. A good cleaning, a bit of sanding, and a few coats of paint will transform someone else’s reject into your cool vintage piece.

A Plain Jane chair is transformed into the best seat in the house. The use of Brushed Nickel spray paint and a quick seat cushion change using a bold, faux-leather marine upholstery fabric in Crocus, makes this junk-yard find a fabulous, functional and fun addition.

Industrial Shelving Desk

Industrial Idea

Job hunting is no easy task. Stay optimistic, motivated, and, by all means, organized. A standard five-tier, self-assembling shelving unit in brushed nickel easily evolves into a space-saving and practical workspace and entertainment center.

Custom arrange shelf heights starting at the bottom; at about 5 inches off the ground to allow feet to easily slip under. The next shelf will be your main desk surface and should be positioned approximately 30 inches from the floor to accommodate most desk chairs.  For a clean and solid workspace, have a sheet of clear acrylic board cut to fit at a home-improvement store. Reuse organizing bins, supplies, and a desk light left over from your college days. The third shelf should be affixed high enough to allow for headroom, while leaving enough room for entertainment equipment. Be sure to measure how much room your TV will need before assembling the final shelf.

DIY Barrell Light
Jean Allsopp; Styling: Molly Clark

Come Into the Light

A single light mounted to a ceiling fan does nothing for the mood of a bedroom. A super stylish barrel shade in place of an outdated ceiling fan light casts the perfect soft glow over the room. If you’re feeling DIY-ish, make your own light using an inexpensive barrel lamp shade and a pendant light kit, available at any home-improvement store.

You’ll need:
Barrel Lamp Shade
Pendant Light Kit
18” Chrome or Brushed Nickel Chain
Brush Nickel Chandelier Canopy and Cord Mount

Following the manufacture’s instructions on the light kit and attach to the shade.  String the light cord in and out of a length of chain. The chain is based on ceiling height and the desired height of pendant light, usually about 6 ½ ‘ off the floor.
